What An Education Assistant Job Entails

Youth around South Africa are eagerly awaiting the opening of the education assistant jobs applications. The county’s education department has since revealed what these teaching assistant jobs will entail.

The Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) seeks to create employment opportunities for unemployed youth living in South Africa. Around 250,000 of these employment opportunities will be facilitated by the country's education department through Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI).

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has already completed three phases of the BEEI. Applications for Phase 4 of the BEEI will open in September 2022. Youth employed through the initiative will either work as Education Assistants (EA) or General School Assistants (GSA). 

Here’s What Education Assistants Will Be Expected To Do At Work

  • Prepare classrooms and laboratories for lessons
  • Mark attendance registers 
  • Distribute worksheets or learning materials needed during the lesson 
  • Collect worksheets or learning materials used during the lesson 
  • Distribute marked learner books or collect books to control classwork, homework and assignments 
  • Assists teachers will classroom tasks 
  • Maintain classroom behaviour 
  • Supervise learners and assist them in the completion of tasks

Youth between the ages of 18 and 34 years old when during the application period can apply for education assistant jobs. Youth must live within a 5 km radius of the school or 30 km radius if it is a small, micro or farm school. Education Assistants must have a Grade 12/Matric qualification

Youth who participated in the first three phases of the programme will not be considered for positions in phase 4.  Individuals who are currently working, involved in training or participating in learnerships also cannot apply for education assistant positions in phase 4.

The DBE added that education assistants can also enhance use of mobile devices for learning by demonstrating how learners can access helpful educational websites.

Teaching assistants who previously participated in the initiative believe that initiative will be beneficial to youth who choose to be part of the programme.
