Taking into account the levels of illiteracy in the country among adults, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) believed it was imperative that the post-school education sector cater to these individuals.
This is where the Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) programmes come in. ABET programmes aim to give adult learners the opportunity to complete their basic education. They are offered at Community Education and Training (CET) centres.
ABET courses have four levels which are equal to a grade in the traditional school system.
Here's what ABET level courses are equal to in traditional schools.
ABET Level 1 = Grade 3
ABET Level 2 = Grade 5
ABET Level 3 = Grade 7
ABET Level 4 = Grade 9
If you want to complete your basic education or know somebody who wants to complete their basic education, an ABET course could be suitable for you.
Here;s Where You Can Do ABET Courses
There are nine CET centres in South Africa, one in each province. However, there are many satellite campuses in communities around the country where you can do ABET courses.
