The R350 grant ensures that more than five million people living in South Africa receive some financial support from the government. However, sometimes the website on which the grant is managed is unavailable, leaving millions in limbo.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) distributes several social support grants. Many of these citizens can apply at Sassa offices around the country. However, this is not the case when it comes to the R350 grant.

The R350 grant was first introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic to assist unemployed individuals during the hard lockdown. It was then reintroduced in the latter parts of 2021 and was set to end in March 2022. However, the grant was then extended by 12 months which will see it come to an end in March 2023.

Individuals can only apply for the R350 grant on the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant website.  The website can also be used to change and update personal details, cell phone numbers, employment information, lifestyle sustainability information and banking Information.

All the information provided by applicants on the website is evaluated by Sassa to ensure that applicants are deserving of the grant. It is therefore crucial that the website is also online. However, this is not always possible and could result in applicants being unable to provide critical information to Sassa.

The agency explains that sometimes network glitches could result in the website being offline. Applicants are encouraged to visit the website at a later time in the hope that the glitches have been resolved.

Sassa said, “The website is working, there could have been a network glitch at the time the client accessed it, It is advised that the client should try again later.”

Its important to note that unsuccessful R350 grant applicants have the right to appeal a rejection decision from Sassa. Unsuccessful clients must now submit R350 grant reconsideration requests to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).
