The South African Police Service (SAPS) is inviting young South Africans to apply for 5,500 police trainee posts for the 2026/2027 financial year. The recruitment drive offers eligible candidates an opportunity to pursue a career in law enforcement and contribute to building safer communities.

Applications open on 21 October 2026 and close on 13 November 2026. Applicants must be aged 18 to under 35 and meet the prescribed eligibility requirements.

“This is an opportunity for young, patriotic and service-driven South Africans aged 18 to under 35 to turn their passion for making a difference into a meaningful career in policing.

"If you are disciplined, physically fit, committed to serving your community and determined to help build a safer South Africa, this could be your moment,” the South African Police Service said in a statement.

How to Apply for SAPS Police Trainee Posts

Applicants must create a profile and verify their accounts using a code sent to their email addresses. Once verified, they can follow the instructions to submit their applications.

The online application system, introduced in 2025, is intended to make recruitment more accessible to young people across South Africa. A QR code linking directly to the portal will also be shared on SAPS social media platforms.

Applicants must have no criminal convictions or pending criminal cases.

SAPS Recruitment Drive Targets Graduates With Specialised Skills

The SAPS is also looking for candidates whose qualifications could support specialised policing functions.

Graduates with qualifications in Law, Policing, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Forensic Investigation and Information Technology may be considered for placement within the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks, Detective and Forensic Services, and Crime Intelligence.

The targeted recruitment process will also seek suitably qualified young people from underrepresented racial groups who meet the prescribed requirements.

SAPS Police Trainee Selection and Training

All applicants will undergo a selection process that includes physical fitness assessments, psychometric and integrity testing, a medical evaluation and an interview. These assessments are designed to determine whether candidates meet the physical, mental and ethical standards required for police service.

Successful recruits with a relevant qualification at NQF Level 6 or higher will complete six months of training at a SAPS training academy. Those without such qualifications will undergo the standard nine-month training programme.

All police trainees will receive a monthly stipend of R5,000 during training.

"Joining the SAPS is more than choosing a career. It is choosing to stand against crime, protect vulnerable people, support communities and contribute to a safer future for all South Africans," the police said.

SAPS Police Trainee Applications Close in November

Applications close on 13 November 2026. Candidates should ensure that they meet the requirements and submit their applications through the official recruitment portal before the deadline.

The SAPS has warned applicants that recruitment is free of charge. No police trainee position is for sale, and candidates should not pay anyone who promises to secure employment or influence the selection process.
