A total of 268 inmates enrolled at correctional services schools across South Africa are preparing to write the 2026 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, has encouraged the Grade 12 candidates to remain focused, trust in their preparation and approach their matric exams with confidence.

In a statement released on Friday, Thobakgale acknowledged the effort candidates have put into their studies and urged them to remain disciplined throughout the examination period.

“The long hours of studying, attending classes, engaging with educators and collaborating with your fellow inmates will be rewarded through your results. Remain disciplined, believe in your abilities and give your best throughout the examination period,” the Commissioner said in a statement on Friday.

Number of Inmate Matric Candidates Increases by 56.7%

The 268 candidates are enrolled at 18 correctional services schools nationwide.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has recorded a significant increase in the number of inmates writing matric, rising from 171 candidates in 2025 to 268 in 2026. This represents a 56.7% increase in participation.

According to Thobakgale, the growth reflects progress in expanding access to education within correctional facilities and the department's commitment to using formal education as a tool for rehabilitation and personal development.

Education gives incarcerated individuals an opportunity to obtain recognised qualifications that can help them pursue further studies and improve their employment prospects after their release.

Educators Support Inmates Preparing for Matric

The Correctional Services Commissioner also recognised the contributions of educators, school principals and departmental officials who help inmates access educational opportunities.

He praised their commitment to supporting candidates throughout their studies and preparing them for the NSC examinations.

“Your work makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those entrusted to our care. Continue the good work, knowing that your efforts are reflected in lives improved and transformed through education,” he said.

The department said it remains committed to providing the academic support candidates need to prepare for their examinations. It also aims to help them access higher education and other opportunities after their release.

Correctional Services Targets Strong 2026 Matric Results

The Department of Correctional Services achieved an overall pass rate of 94.4% in the 2025 National Senior Certificate examinations.

The department is now looking forward to the announcement of the 2026 matric results in January 2027, with hopes of improving its performance.

“Correctional Services is looking forward to the announcement of the 2026 results in January 2027, highly optimistic of more correctional services schools securing a 100% pass.”

The NSC examinations form part of the department's broader efforts to promote rehabilitation through formal education and skills development.

By giving inmates access to education, DCS aims to improve their chances of pursuing further qualifications, finding employment and successfully reintegrating into society.

Vocational Training and Rehabilitation Remain Priorities

Alongside formal schooling, the department continues to prioritise vocational training and other rehabilitation programmes designed to equip offenders with practical skills.

These initiatives are intended to support personal development and prepare individuals for life beyond correctional facilities.

The department has confirmed that arrangements are in place to support all 268 inmate candidates during the examination period.

“The Department of Correctional Services is fully prepared with all necessary arrangements in place to support the 268 inmate candidates throughout the examination period.”
