Millions of people rely on financial assistance from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). There have been delays with grant payments in the past few months, however, the government agency has given an explanation for this.

The Department of Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu has shared that there are seven million people who are benefiting from Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant,

The grant, valued at R350 has been benefitting a number of individuals since the government introduced it as a response to individuals financially impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the R350 grant was administered under the Disaster Management Act, but this regulation was replaced by the Social Assistance Act earlier this year.

Later, the monthly threshold was then raised from R350 to R624, aligning with the monthly food poverty line of South Africans.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) admitted that changes in regulations have resulted in applications pending due to a high number of backlogs that the Agency is currently faced with.

In a statement, Sassa has confirmed:

The applications with a July status of pending will be updated after the August 2022 payments to the applicable outcome.

Sassa’s General Manager, Brenton Van Vrede has explained that the government agency withheld July payments, so that the amendments could be published.

It is said that these amendments were published in mid-August, this will then be followed by July payments being assessed towards the end of August.

According to Sassa, the aim of introducing a new regulation is to make sure more people benefit from the R350 grant.

The government agency has since apologised to all grant applicants and beneficiaries for the challenges being experienced by Sassa.

Van Vrede has also assured them that they are also working around the clock to make sure that people receive their grant payments.

It has been reported that August payments have been received since 21 September 2022.
