Many individuals will look to upskill themselves and look to pursue a career that requires them to attend a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college. There are funding options for these students, but is Feenix one of them?

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges have become an increasingly attractive option. In 2022, it was estimated that 395 000 individuals attended one of the South Africa's 50 TVET colleges.

A TVET College student will receive education and training which relates to a specific range of jobs, employment or entrepreneurial possibilities. Some courses offered at TVET colleges include business, engineering, technology, manufacturing and hospitality.

While some TVET college students can benefit from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) bursary, some students will fall outside of Nsfas’ financial threshold.

Can TVET College Students Raise Funding Through Feenix?

Feenix is an online crowdfunding platform that allows students to raise money to fund their tertiary education journey. Unfortunately, TVET college college students cannot create a Feenix profile to crowdfund their studies.

Only students attending one of South Africa’s 26 public universities can use Feenix as a platform to raise funds.

Here Are The Feenix Requirements

  • You must be a South African citizen/permanent resident/refugee or asylum seeker
  • You must have a certified copy of your identity document
  • You must be registered at a public South African university
  • You must have an official* fee statement (it must be less than 30 days old and have an official university letterhead)
  • Your combined household income must be under R600 000 per year

Feenix is still a great option for missing-middle students around the country and could help fund their tertiary education journey at public universities. Missing middle” refers to those students who come from working-class households that do not qualify for funds from Nsfas but cannot afford higher education.
