NSFAS provides bursaries and loans, covering study-related expenses at 26 public universities and 50 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. Funding encompasses tuition, registration, and various allowances, distributed in 10 monthly instalments from February to November.
Allowance Boost Confirmed by Minister
In February, Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane declared an increase in NSFAS allowances for the upcoming year. While precise figures remain undisclosed, the Minister confirmed a "boost" in payments compared to the previous year.
University students will receive a 4% increase. Notably, TVET college students will see a significant rise, with allowances increasing from R10,000 to R14,600 per annum, representing a 46% surge.
Breakdown of 2025 NSFAS Allowances
NSFAS bursary recipients at both universities and TVET colleges are eligible for allowances covering learning materials, living expenses (for those in non-catered residences), accommodation, and transport for non-resident students.
Distance learning students receive tailored allowances: university students studying less than 60% of module credits qualify for learning material allowances only, while TVET college students receive personal care allowances.
Students with NSFAS loans are limited to accommodation and learning material allowances, as transport costs are excluded. NSFAS has confirmed that, "the loan won't cover transport costs for students."
Payment Procedures for 2025
For 2025, TVET college students will continue to receive direct bank deposits.
Students are advised to update their banking details on the myNSFAS portal. University students will maintain the current payment method, receiving allowances directly from their institutions, until NSFAS announces any changes. Students are urged to consult their institution's financial aid offices for specific payment procedures.
