Allowances Available to Unisa Students
NSFAS allowances for distance learning students vary based on their course load.
Students taking fewer than 60 course credits qualify only for the learning materials allowance. Those registered for a full-time equivalent course credit load qualify for both the learning materials allowance and the personal care allowance.
Allowances for students in distance education programmes are calculated based on the number of courses registered.
Unisa students funded by NSFAS will receive a learning materials allowance for educational resources and an incidental allowance to support living expenses. The incidental allowance is only available to students registered for 10 modules.
How Unisa Students Will Receive Their NSFAS Allowances
Unisa has confirmed that all NSFAS allowances will be disbursed via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) directly into students’ bank accounts. This remains the standard payment method for NSFAS-funded university students.
Steps to Capture Bank Details for NSFAS Allowances
To ensure timely payments, students must submit their banking details as follows:
- Access the platform via the link sent to their myLife e-mail account.
- Enter their banking details.
- Await verification by the bank.
Unisa has emphasised that allowances will only be paid into bank accounts registered in the student’s name.
No third-party banking details will be accepted.
The university has also urged students to monitor their bank verification status to avoid payment delays.

- UP (Updated by student): New banking details submitted, awaiting re-verification.
