The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has announced that millions of grant recipients will see an increase in their payments starting in October 2024. Sassa distributes over 18 million permanent grants every month to those in need.
These grants include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.
Grant Increases to Counter Inflation
During the annual budget speech, the Minister of Finance confirmed adjustments to the value of social grants, designed to protect them against inflation. These increases are typically small but crucial.
The first adjustment for 2024 occurred in April, with the second now taking effect in October.
Which Sassa Grants Will Increase in October 2024?
- The Old-Age Pension grant will rise by R10, bringing the monthly total to R2,190 for recipients aged 60 to 74, and to R2,210 for those aged 75 and older.
- The Disability Grant will also see a R10 increase, with the new amount set at R2,190 per month.
- The Care Dependency Grant will increase to R2,190.
- The War Veterans Grant will rise by R10, bringing it to R2,210 per month.
Which Sassa Grants Won't Be Increased in October 2024?
The Child Support grant, Foster Care grant, and Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant will not be increased in October 2024.

SRD Grant Payment Dates for October 2024
The SRD grant is paid to more than 9 million people monthly. However, SRD payments are processed separately from the permanent grants. While Sassa has not yet confirmed SRD payment dates for October 2024, these grants are typically paid in the final week of the month.
