The University of South Africa (Unisa) will soon be closing their 2025 academic year. Prospective students who wish to pursue their tertiary education at the country’s largest university should now submit their applications for 2025 admission.
Unisa follows an Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) model, allowing students to study from home without attending any in-person classes. In recent years, the university has also moved its examinations online.
As an ODeL institution, Unisa is an ideal choice for many individuals, regardless of their personal circumstances, work commitments, or lifestyle.
Unisa 2025 Application Period
Applications for the 2025 academic year at Unisa opened on 21 August and closes today, 11 October 2024.
Applications are accepted for undergraduate qualifications, advanced certificates, higher certificates, honours degrees, postgraduate diplomas, and advanced diplomas.
How Unisa Applications Work
Unisa's 2025 selection process is based on calculating a prospective student's individual points score. This score is derived from their final Grade 12 marks and other crucial factors such as the school they attended, gender, socio-economic background, race, and more.
In line with its commitment to addressing past inequalities, Unisa has implemented an application and selection process that effectively addresses historical imbalances without compromising quality standards.
Before applying, applicants must ensure they meet both the statutory and college-specific admission requirements, including the required Academic Points Score (APS) for their chosen qualification.
The minimum APS score varies depending on the college and specific qualification.
Applicants are encouraged to review the admission requirements for each qualification they are interested in.

It's important to note that acceptance into Unisa for 2025 is not guaranteed, as admission will be based on the number of available spaces for each qualification.
Applicants may apply for up to two qualifications, listing them in order of preference. However, they can only register for one qualification, even if they are accepted for both.
Unisa will notify applicants of their application status, indicating the qualification they have been accepted for and the corresponding study period.
Upon receiving an offer from Unisa, applicants must respond within the specified timeframe.
Applicants who fail to accept the offer within 10 working days will have their admission offer withdrawn, and their space will be allocated to another applicant.
For first-time applicants, completing the First-Year Experience MOOC is mandatory before they can accept the offer.
Applicants can only accept one offer. Once they receive an offer for a qualification (whether it’s their first or second choice), the other offer will be automatically withdrawn.
After accepting the offer, students must register for the designated study period. If they do not register for that semester, they will need to reapply for admission in the next application cycle.
Who Needs To Apply?
Anyone intending to begin a new qualification must apply for admission. This includes first-time applicants to Unisa as well as current students seeking to change their qualifications and/or specialisation.
Applicants completing a higher certificate and wishing to continue with further undergraduate studies must also apply for admission. Additionally, those who previously applied for admission and received an offer but did not accept or register will also need to reapply.
Individuals planning to enrol in classes at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college under the Unisa-TVET agreement must also apply for admission.
