The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government agency responsible for providing financial aid to eligible students enrolled in higher education institutions. This aid typically covers tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses.
NSFAS will continue to be led by its current administrator, Freeman Nomvalo, for an extended period. This decision was announced by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Nobuhle Nkabane, in a recent government notice.
Nomvalo, who was appointed in April 2024 by the previous Minister, Blade Nzimande, took over the reins of NSFAS after the dissolution of its board. This move followed widespread student protests and concerns over delayed allowance payments.
Originally, Nomvalo's term as administrator was scheduled to conclude at the end of December 2024 or upon the appointment of a new NSFAS board. However, the latest government notice extends this period until the end of March 2025.
The extension of Nomvalo's term suggests that the process of appointing a new NSFAS board may take longer than anticipated. It also indicates a continued need for stability and experienced leadership within the organization, particularly as it navigates challenges related to funding and student support.
During this period, the Minister shall take all necessary steps to appoint a new Board that appropriately reflects the diversity of skills and experience required for the effective governance and management of NSFAS.
"Upon the appointment of the new Board, the administrator’s role will terminate, and the administrator will assist with transitional processes, if necessary, for a defined period as stipulated in a separate agreement, to ensure a smooth transfer of governance."
As the new NSFAS board is eventually appointed, Nomvalo may be required to assist with a smooth transition period to ensure a seamless handover of responsibilities.
