The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) CEO, Busisiwe Memela-Khambula, has been temporarily suspended following concerns raised by the Public Protector.
The Department of Social Development announced the decision in response to findings by the Public Protector, which revealed "a myriad of serious issues." Social Development Minister Nokuzola Tolashe stated the suspension was necessary to protect the integrity of ongoing investigations into Memela-Khambula's appointment.
“This precautionary suspension allows the agency to investigate without interference, ensuring transparency and accountability,” Tolashe explained.
Protecting the Process and CEO's Dignity
Minister Tolashe emphasised the suspension was not punitive but a precautionary measure. “We aim to uphold the CEO’s dignity while addressing the challenges facing Sassa. Decisive action is needed to ensure the organization operates transparently and efficiently to fight hunger and poverty in South Africa,” she said.
Sassa's Crucial Role
Sassa distributes over 18 million permanent grant payments, including the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid. This is in addition to the approximately 8 million people who receive Social Relief of Distress Grant payments.

Acting CEO Appointed
During Memela-Khambula's suspension, Gauteng Regional Manager Themba Matlou will serve as Acting CEO. Memela-Khambula will continue to receive full pay while the investigation is underway.
This development underscores the government's commitment to ensuring the integrity of Sassa as it supports the nation’s most vulnerable.
