NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving students enrolled in approved courses at universities This funding covers tuition and registration fees, as well as several allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials
What is the N+ Rule?
The N+ rule sets the funding limit. Students exceeding the N+ rule are disqualified from NSFAS funding. "N" represents the minimum time required to complete a qualification. Students are expected to finish within this timeframe.
Students not complying with university academic progression pathways or exceeding the university N+ rule may lose funding. The N+1 rule ensures students complete studies within a reasonable time, preventing delays.
University Students
The university N+ rule is based on registration years in higher education. For distance learning students at non-contact universities, the "N" period is doubled due to remote learning challenges. This means the "N" period is twice the minimum time required for the qualification.
Students with disabilities qualify for an N+2 extension, recognising their unique challenges.
TVET College Students
The TVET college N+ rule is based on NSFAS-funded academic terms. Additional NSFAS funding may be used for repeating any level.
Exceptions
The N+ rule does not apply to occupational programmes, as they are tied to employment contracts that do not allow for the N+1 period.
NSFAS funding cannot be used for historic debt.
