Messages circulating on social media have claimed that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme opened bursary applications for the next academic year. This left many prospective applicants gathering the required documents to apply for funding.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has assured prospective bursary applicants that the application period for the 2024 academic year is not open. This comes after a message was circulated on social media claiming that the application period was open. 

NSFAS warned prospective applicants against sharing their personal information and applying for funding through website links. 

Please also be aware of fake websites and social media platforms advising you to share your personal details and apply for NSFAS funding through links; these messages are NOT from NSFAS. 

Applications for NSFAS funding must be submitted through the myNSFAS application portal during the scheme's official application periods. 

Please note that NSFAS funding applications for the 2024 academic year are NOT open yet as per the messages being circulated on social media. 

The application period for University students usually opens towards the end of a calendar year allowing applicants to apply for funding before the commencement of the next academic year.  

NSFAS will inform all stakeholders when university bursary applications will open for the 2024 academic year. 

There are several application periods for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college students. These application periods are closely aligned with the TVET college academic calendar issued by the Department of Higher Education and Training. 

Semester 2 TVET colleges NSFAS applications will open on 17 July 2023 and close on 31 July 2023. NSFAS applications for Trimester 3 applications will start on 4 September 2023 and close on 20 September 2023. 

Students can apply for funding online via the NSFAS website, NSFAS head office and at their institution's bursary office during official application periods. Successful applicants relieve comprehensive funding for their studies 

NSFAS will pay a student's tuition and registration fees. They will also provide students with an accommodation allowance, learning material allowance and a levelling allowance. A transport allowance is paid to students if they are living at home and travelling to their campus.
