As matriculants enter the world of tertiary education, it is important to do your research on colleges as some may be unregistered and are not able to provide you with an accredited course.
There has been an increase in the number of unregistered institutions of higher learning offering qualifications to unsuspecting students.
This is often only realised once students have completed these qualifications. This leaves them without valid qualifications and also out of pocket after paying for these bogus courses.
Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Blade Nzimande says the expanding number of illegal colleges is concerning for the department.
He said, “The public is, therefore, requested to be vigilant and not fall for the bogus operators who are only interested in money and do not offer accredited programmes”.

Nzimande added that some registered colleges are also providing courses that are non-accredited and non-registered programmes and qualifications. He said that even if the college is registered, they have a legal obligation to ensure the programmes and qualifications they provide are accredited and registered.
The minister also warned the public against being misled by institutions offering ‘internationally recognised qualifications’.
“All programmes and qualifications offered by duly registered institutions must be accredited by the relevant Quality Councils in South Africa and must be reflected as such against the name of each institution that appears in the registers” concluded Nzimande.
Students are advised to request a certificate of registration before they register at an institution.
The certificate of registration requires the following information…
- Place of Offering
- Venue of Offering
- Information about the courses the institution is allowed to offer
