The announcement from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) brings relief to thousands of students and parents who had been facing uncertainty about their educational futures.
Former Minister Blade Nzimande had confirmed the deregistration of Damelin, City Varsity, Icesa City Campus, and Lyceum College due to Educor’s failure to submit audited financial statements for 2021 and 2022.
In August 2024, Minister Nobuhle Nkabane provisionally reinstated Educor's registration on humanitarian grounds to minimise disruptions for enrolled students.
The provisional registration came with strict conditions, including the submission of monthly reports to DHET. These reports had to detail financial status, student enrolments, and progress towards meeting Council on Higher Education accreditation standards.
According to Dr Sishi, the DHET received all required reports, enabling the department to grant full registration:
Indeed, Educor has been reinstated based on the agreed progress reports we have received.
He added that the group has now achieved full registration after six months of monitoring:
We didn’t just re-register them. We began with provisional registration to ensure they were progressing toward full compliance. They are now fully on our register, and we congratulate them.
Dr Sishi clarified that the deregistration was due to administrative non-compliance and not the quality of Educor’s academic programmes.
He emphasised that while Educor has regained its registration, significant work remains to address previous concerns. The DHET will continue to enforce compliance with all relevant legislation and policies.
