The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) distributes a number of different relief grants to people living in South Africa.
One of the grants that SASSA distributes is the War Veterans Grant. To qualify for the War Veterans grant you must have served in the military in the Second World War (1939-1945) or the Korean War (1950-1953). The grant is worth R1 910 per month.
To qualify for the War Veterans Grant, applicants must...
be a South African citizen or permanent resident
live in South Africa
be 60 years of age or older or be disabled
have fought in the Second World War or the Korean War
not receive any other social grant for yourself
not be cared for or maintained by a state institution
not earn more than R 86 280 if you are single or R172 560 if married per annum
not have assets worth more than R 1 227 600 if you are single or R 2 455 200 if you are married
You will also need the following documentation
Identification document
Proof of service certificate
Bank account details
Investment details (If applicable)
An affidavit proving you are single or a marriage certificate
If your spouse is dead, you will need to provide a death certificate
If your spouse is employed, you must provide their pay slips
Your war veterans grant may lapse if you do not claim your money for a period of three months. It can also lapse if you are admitted to a state institution or if you pass away. Your grant could also be reduced by 25% if the state institution you are admitted to has a contract with the government
