Parents want to spend time with their newest members of the family. South African law makes provisions for Adoption leave, Parental leave (for fathers), and Commissioning parental leave.
The Labour Laws Amendment Act amended the Unemployment Insurance Act, 2001, ‘to provide for the right to claim parental and commissioning parental benefits from the Unemployment Insurance Fund’ (UIF).

Qualifying Conditions for UIF Parental Benefits
The payment of Parental Benefits will be in line with the 10 leave granted and will be subject to credit days accumulated and the 66% flat rate.
You must be registered and contributing to the UIF.
You must first apply for leave with your employee to be eligible for UIF parental benefits and it must be declared that you will not receive a full salary during the 10 leave days.
Male and Females can qualify for parental benefits. However if the female parent has given birth to the child, they qualify for 4 months of maternity leave.
You must be employed and contributing to the UIF for at least 13 weeks prior to applying for UIF Parental Benefits.
