Students who are beneficiaries of South Africa’s bursary scheme will soon have more control over their money. This is because the scheme aims to make their allowances easier to access with the introduction of a new payment facility.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) will be paying student allowances directly to the beneficiaries. This will be facilitated through the new Nsfas Mastercard direct-payment solution.

Nsfas Mastercards will replace the Nsfas Wallet payment platform currently used by Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College students.

Students will be able to draw cash without bank fees at participating merchants with the Nsfas Mastercard. They will also be able to purchase data, airtime, electricity and use the e-Wallet payment option using their Nsfas Mastercard.

Here’s How To Activate Your Nsfas Mastercard

Step 1: SMS “Activate” followed by a space then the last 4 digits of your card to 31571.

Step 2: Receive your PIN via SMS. Memorise your PIN, then delete the SMS.

Step 3: Your card will be activated when you receive your first NSFAS bursary payment into the card.

Not every student will have access to the Nsfas Mastercard when it is introduced later this month.

Students will be contacted individually by Nsfas when they are moved onto the new payment platform. Once they receive notification from Nsfas, they will register for their Nsfas Mastercard.
