When you earn a salary or commission from a company, your employer is required to withhold taxes each month and pay them over to SARS on your behalf.

The process of deducting or withholding tax from remuneration as it is earned by an employee is commonly referred to as PAYE.

The amount deducted from your salary is based on how much you earn and whether you receive fringe benefits or not. Thus, the name “Pay-As-You-Earn”.

PAYE can be paid using the following methods:

  1. Via the eFiling platform.
  2. Electronic payments through the internet (EFT)
  3. At a branch of one of the relevant approved banking institutions (ABSA, FNB, Nedbank or Standard Bank).
  4. Manual forms of payments will no longer be accepted by SARS. Cheques posted / delivered to SARS will be returned to the client.

In a tweet the official UIFBenefits page wrote:

“UIF has received a number of enquires regarding the updating of the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) number on the UIF Siyaya database.”
