The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that it will announce the national matric results on 19 January 2023. Results will then be available for individuals at schools and online on 20 January 2023.
Some education experts have pointed out that the big deal made out of matric results places schools under enormous pressure to get more learners to pass.
It is for this reason that some education experts are of the opinion that schools end up manipulating the system to make sure that they are recognised for their pass rate.
In an interview, Professor of education at Stellenbosch University, Professor Jonathan Jansen has shared:
To get more children to pass, schools hold learners back in grade ten or they disappear from the trajectory.
Jansen added that making learners move from mathematics to mathematical literacy is among the primary methods used to make sure that more learners pass in their matric year.
It is said that the best statistics to guide the education sector to measure progress is to have strong measures of literacy and numeracy in the foundation stages of school.
According to the Zero Dropout campaign, around 40% of Grade one learners will exit the schooling system before reaching Grade 12.
To counter learners dropping out of the schooling system, the lobby group aims to increase national awareness about this problem and spur action towards addressing it. The lobby group has shared that it is working with schools to help reduce learner dropouts.
