More than 66% of South Africans between the ages of 15-years-old and 25-years-old are unemployed.

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Dr Blade Nzimande has announced a target of achieving more than 100 000 workplace-based learning opportunities for students.

This, he believes, will help combat the high unemployment rate among the youth.

The minister added that the department will also be targeting 20 500 opportunities for apprentices, 22 500 for artisanal trades, 1 300 for those completing learnerships and 148 000 for learners entering into various skills development programmes.

Nzimande explained that these development programs will be centred around developing digital skills, crop production skills and plant production skills.

The minister is calling on employers to open up their workplaces for students from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students.

He believes that the primary aim of these placements is to assist young people to enter the workplace.

TVET colleges focus on providing students with vocational and occupational education and training to prepare them to become functional workers in a skilled trade.

Nzimande added that employers should also give workplace exposure to TVET lecturers as this will allow them to equip students with the skills that are is required in the workplace.

“Government has already spent vast amounts of money to support our youth through the TVET system, and therefore, it is important that we assist them to transition to the workplace through appropriate placement,” explained Nzimande.

“We will continue to establish both national and international partners to join us in ensuring that we create the necessary jobs that our economy and our country so much need”, concluded Nzimande.
