Every new job and company is different and can be a lot to take in. To help ensure that your first week at your new job goes well, here are a few common mistakes to be aware of and how to make sure you avoid them.

Being a Know-It-All

You were hired for your knowledge, experience and skill, but that doesn’t mean you have to desperately show it off on your first day.

No matter how much you think you know, you should take care to listen to how the company works. Remember, you're a new addition to the company and there are things you have to be taught on how the company operates. 

Listen and pay attention to what your manager or supervisor says as they explain something new to you. 

Not asking questions 

On your first day, you can feel an overwhelming need to be good at your job straight away.

One of the most important things you can do on your first day is listen intently and pay attention to everything you’re told. There will no doubt be a lot to take in, so don’t be shy about taking notes.

However, once you’ve been shown to your desk and are left to do your first tasks, don’t make the mistake of not asking questions.

Your new boss won’t thank you for sitting there confused or making a mistake simply because you were too afraid to ask. Rather ask and clarify, instead of staying in the dark.

Being too eager

Don’t jump the gun in an attempt to make your mark straight away.

It’s your first day, so act like it. It’s okay to not be the same as the rest of your team. Even if you’re at the same level in terms of experience, take the first day to take it easy, observe your surroundings and familiarise yourself with your responsibilities.

If you jump in too soon, you are more likely to make an unnecessary mistake. You’ll have plenty of time to be busy with work and make your mark.

Not Observing Company Culture

Pay attention to what your new colleagues are doing, and again, don't be afraid to ask if you're unsure. For example, do your colleagues play music while they work? Do they use their laptops during meetings?

Observe before getting too comfortable straight away, especially on your first day. Watch your colleagues and their behaviour before just assuming. 

Taking On Too Much Work, Too Soon

A first impression is a lasting impression, so don’t bite off more than you can chew.

When employees are starting a new job, many managers assign smaller tasks for a reason. It takes some time to familiarize yourself with a new company, colleagues and workload. At the beginning, it’s much better to focus on the work given to you (and do it well) than take on additional responsibility in an effort to impress your boss.

Overextending yourself could lead to missed deadlines and mistakes. After you’ve met the whole team and understand your duties and expectations, then you’ll be ready to take on bigger, more challenging assignments.

Keeping To Yourself When Starting a New Job

Some employees can tend to bury their head in work and avoid interacting with others. While it may be nerve-racking to introduce yourself to new people, it’s important to make the most of your first few days and get to know your peers throughout the company.

You’ll be working with these people on many different projects, and being friendly with your colleagues can help to enjoy your work more.

Take opportunities (like an office celebration or a simple chat in the break room) to learn more about your coworkers instead of keeping to yourself.

Every workplace is different, which means different rules for every one.
