With the announcement of the National matric pass rate for the class of 2021 out of the way, the performance of the country's nine provinces is in the spotlight.

On Thursday evening, Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga announced the national pass rate as well as the pass rate in each province. This follows the extensive 5 week exam period that nearly 900 000 learners had to undergo last year before receiving their exam results.

The pass rates across the provinces are as follows:

  • Free State: 85.7% (improvement of 0.6%)
  • Gauteng: 82.8% (decline of 1%)
  • Western Cape: 81.2% (improvement of 1.3%)
  • North West: 78.2% (improvement of 2.0%)
  • KwaZulu-Natal: 76.8% (decline of 08.%)
  • Mpumalanga: 73.6% (decline of 0.1%)
  • Eastern Cape: 73% (improvement of 4.9%)
  • Northern Cape: 71.4% (improvement of 5.4%)
  • Limpopo: 66.7% (decline of 1.5%)

Minister Motshekga has congratulated the class of 2021 for persevering and achieving good results, despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic.

"We are indeed proud of the Classes of 2020 and 2021, which persevered against such monumental challenges that our system was never exposed to in the past. These two classes have characterised the resilience of the system which withstood an unprecedented test of administering an examination of the largest number of candidates; faced by the worst pandemic in human history"

Individual results will be available on Friday, 21 January 2022. CLICK HERE to find out how to access your matric results online.
