In 2020, the South African government established the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to assist unemployed individuals who would not be able to work during the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.

The SRD grant is distributed by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). SASSA has called upon SRD grant applicants to declare their marital status and whether they changed their names since the SRD grant was established.

SASSA explains that grant recipients who got married and changed their surnames at the Department of Home Affairs must update their information with SASSA.

This is because SASSA validates your information monthly with home affairs to determine your eligibility for SRD grant payments. SASSA warns that if your information with them does not match the information at Home Affairs, your grant application may be declined.

Here are the steps SASSA takes to determine whether or not you qualify for the R350 SRD grant:

Step 1 - The information you provide to SASSA is validated by the Department of Home Affairs. This information includes your ID number, Name and Surname. This is why SASSA is calling on people who got married to update their details

Step 2 - Your ID number is then matched against various databases. These databases include the South African Revenue Services (SARS), Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

Step 4 - Your ID number and mobile number is then put through a Fraud Risk Scoring process.

Step 5 - Once these steps are completed, SASSA will decide if your SRD grant application is successful or unsuccessful
