The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has reminded parents that admissions for the 2024 school year will close on 14 April 2023 at 23:59. This leaves parents with just a few hours to complete admission applications on behalf of their children.
The admissions application applies to learners who will begin Grade 1 and Grade 8 in the 2024 school year. Admissions must be completed on the WCED’s eServices portal.
Before an application can be submitted for admission, the parent must first register on the application portal.

Step 1: Visit the WCED eServices Portal by CLICKING HERE
Step 2: Click on GR1 and GR8 Applications button
Step 3: Click on the Sign-Up option
Step 4: Fill in your details. (use your ID as your username
Step 5: Read the terms and conditions
Step 6: Upload certified copies of all required documents
Step 7: Accept the terms and conditions
Step 8: Click “Next”
Step 9: Capture the parent's profiles
Step 10: Click on NEXT to load the learner's profile

Here’s How To Apply To Schools
Step 1: Indicate that the learner is applying for the first time at a school in the Western Cape
Step 2: Fill in the learner’s information (CEMIS number)
Step 3: Select the grade for which you are applying
Step 4: Fill in additional learner information
Step 5: Select preferred schools
Step 6: Place the schools in order of preference
Step 7: Upload certified copies of the learner’s documents
Step 8: Tick the declaration and submit the application
Several supporting documents are required to complete the admission application. These documents include…
- Immunisation card (Primary School Applications Only)
- Latest Schools Report Card (Applicable learners who previously attended school)
- ID document, birth certificate or study documents
- Proof of Residence
Parents are reminded to apply to at least three schools for admission. They can also indicate their order of preference on the admissions system. Parents of learners who were not accepted for admission at any school are required to contact the WCED for assistance in finding a placement.
If parents are unsatisfied with the outcome of their admission applications, they may submit an appeal to the Minister of Education at [email protected]
The provincial education department received applications for 121,490 learners for the 2024 school year. Due to parents applying for placement at more than one school, the total number of individual applications to schools received amounted to more than 400,000 applications.
