All of South Africa’s public universities have been ranked on the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities' latest list. The group explained that the ranking does not have anything to do with university websites but rather the quality and quantity of their content.
The University of Cape Town (UCT) was the highest ranked South African university which occupied position 245. They were joined by the University of Witwatersrand (394), Stellenbosch University (437) and University of Pretoria (447) as the only South African universities to feature in the top 450 universities.
Linda Meyer from Universities South Africa says the ranking boils down to the quality and accessibility of the educational institutions provide.
Meyer says this will allow universities an opportunity to reflect on the developments in the higher education sector and invest in those areas that are important to elevate themselves in the ranking list.
