The journey to becoming a real estate agent in South Africa consists of four steps, yet there is much confusion surrounding this reasonably simple process.
To help individuals understand the process the SA Real Estate Academy(SAREA) has created a step by step guide in their video titled “The Real Estate Qualification Process in South Africa”.
“To get from the start of your internship to the finish you have to complete four things.”
Step 1: Register with the EEAB
Your first step is to register with the Estate Agency Affairs Board as an intern estate agent through a registered company. This internship will take place over a 12 month period. “The 12 month internship is a minimum period, but you are only allowed a maximum of 24 months to complete the process.” During this time you will learn about the sector and be mentored by an experienced agent.
Step 2: Complete your qualification
In this phase you will need to complete your FETC Real Estate NQF Level 4 qualification with an accredited provider. This is a basic qualification requirement for a career in residential and commercial property. A Services Seta accredited certification, will allow you to become a fully certified and industry recognised real estate professional.
Step 3: Draw up a logbook
Prospective estate agents are required to complete and submit a logbook to the EAAB as part of the qualifying process. “The logbook is not a prerequisite for doing the qualification.” However it must meet the requirements set out by the estate board in order to be accepted. The logbook can be completed simultaneously with the qualification.
Step 4: Write the PDE exam
The Professional Designation Exam (PDE) is an integrated test of knowledge for estate agents. “This PDE exam is the final step you have to take before you can be upgraded to full status agent.” You can only write your exam once your internship has been successfully completed. Once you pass this exam you will receive the designation Professional Practitioner in Real Estate (PPRE) and will be allowed to operate as an agent.
