The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) offers crucial financial support through a variety of social grants. If you require assistance from the government, you can apply for a grant through Sassa. These grants are available to residents of South Africa.
These include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.
Applications for the October 2024 Sassa grant payments are now open. Here’s how you can apply:
Visit Your Local Sassa Office
You can apply for a grant in person at your nearest Sassa office, where staff will assist you with the application process. If you’re unable to apply in person due to illness or age, you can authorise someone to apply on your behalf.
Apply Online
Sassa also provides online applications for the Child Support, Older Persons, and Disability Grants.
Step 1: Go to the SASSA Services Portal.
Step 2: Register as a new user.
Step 3: Log in using your username and password.
Step 4: Click on "Apply For A Grant."
Step 5: Choose the grant you wish to apply for (e.g., Older Persons, Child Support, Foster Child).
Step 6: Complete the application form in full.
Step 7: Print the affidavit generated by SASSA and have it certified by a Commissioner of Oaths.
Step 8: Print, sign, and submit the Bank Payment form along with the certified affidavit.
Step 9: Upload all the required supporting documents in PDF format.
Step 10: Submit your application. You will receive a confirmation email or SMS with a reference number to track your application.

Eligibility Criteria for Sassa Grants
As of 1 October 2023, specific asset and income limits apply to certain grants:
- Older Persons, Disability, and War Veterans Grants: The asset threshold is R1,247,400 for single individuals and R2,494,800 for married couples. The income limit is R87,720 annually for single individuals and R175,440 for married couples.
- Child Support Grant: The income limit is R55,200 for single individuals and R110,400 for married couples.
- Foster Child Grant and Care Dependency Grant: These are not means-tested, but the Care Dependency Grant has an asset threshold of R226,800 for a single caregiver and R453,600 for married couples.
How to Apply for the R370 Grant

- Click the yellow "Click here to apply online" bar in the relevant section.
- Enter your mobile number, click "Send SMS," and input the one-time pin (OTP) sent to your phone for verification. Complete the application by following the prompts.
Eligibility for the R370 Grant
To qualify, applicants must be between 18 and 59 years old, unemployed, and have less than R624 in their bank account. Beneficiaries may also receive other financial support, such as NSFAS bursaries, UIF benefits, or other Sassa grants.
