The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) distributes approximately 18 million permanent grants monthly to support vulnerable residents across the country.

Sassa offers various grants tailored to the needs of beneficiaries. These include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.

Applying for a Permanent Grant

You can apply for a permanent grant in person at your nearest Sassa office. If you're unable to visit due to age or illness, a family member or friend can apply on your behalf with a letter of authorisation.

Alternatively, you can apply online for certain grants, such as the older persons grant, child support grant, and foster child grant, through the Sassa services website.

After submitting a Sassa grant application, you’ll receive a receipt or reference number. Keep this safe, as it is the only proof that your application was received by Sassa. Remember, there is no fee required to apply for a Sassa grant.

Checking Your Sassa Status

Applicants can track the status of their Sassa grant applications through several channels. If you applied online, you can check the status using your reference number on the Sassa website.

The application date is marked as the day you submit all the required documents and meet Sassa’s criteria.

If Your Grant Application Is Rejected

Sassa will notify you in writing if your application is rejected, providing reasons and information on your right to appeal. If your application is unsuccessful, you can appeal the decision to the Minister of Social Development within 90 days of receiving the rejection notice.

Payment and Grant Suspension

Grant recipients can choose to receive payments through direct bank deposits or via Sassa-appointed service providers. Beneficiaries must notify Sassa of any changes in their circumstances, such as address, marital status, financial situation, or child custody.

Failure to do so may result in the suspension of the grant. Other causes for suspension include changes in financial or medical status, non-compliance with grant reviews, fraud, errors in approval, or missing documentation.

If your grant is suspended due to non-collection or failure to complete a review, you must reapply within 30 days to reinstate it.

Important Considerations

Grant beneficiaries are responsible for keeping Sassa informed of any changes and responding promptly to all correspondence. It is crucial to safeguard your social grant card and PIN to prevent unauthorised use.
