The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, often referred to as the R370 grant, provides crucial support for unemployed individuals in South Africa, helping them purchase food and cover other basic needs.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) reports that approximately 10 million people apply for grants each month. However, not all applicants are approved for the R370 grant payment.
If an SRD grant application is rejected, applicants have the right to appeal if they believe the rejection was incorrect.
This article outlines the process for submitting a R370 grant appeal for September 2024.
Who Qualifies for the R370 Grant?
Before submitting an appeal, it is important to understand the eligibility criteria for the R370 grant.
To qualify for the R370 grant, individuals must be between 18 and 59 years old and must be unemployed. R370 grant beneficiaries may receive any other government financial assistance, including NSFAS bursaries, UIF benefits, or other Sassa grants.
Applications will be rejected if the applicant's income exceeds the threshold, which refers to the amount of money in the applicant's bank account. The current income threshold is R624.
How to Check Your R370 Grant Application Status
If you have applied for the R370 grant, you can check your application status online via the Sassa SRD website. This will inform you whether your application has been approved, rejected, or is still pending.
If your application is rejected and you believe you meet the eligibility criteria, you have the right to appeal Sassa's decision. Appeals are managed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).
How to Appeal a Rejected R370 Grant Application
- Visit the ITSAA website.
- Enter your South African ID number.
- Enter the mobile number used during the application process.
- Click "Send Pin" and wait for an SMS with a verification code.
- Once you receive the pin, enter it and click "Submit."

- Choose the reason for your appeal from the provided options.
- Click "Submit" to complete the appeal process.
You must submit a separate appeal for each month your SRD grant application was rejected. ITSAA aims to finalise appeals within 60-90 days.
What to Do if Your R370 Grant Appeal is Still Rejected
If ITSAA rejects your appeal, their decision is final. However, if you are dissatisfied with the outcome, you can request a judicial review within 180 days of receiving the ITSAA decision.
