The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) plays a crucial role in supporting South African students by providing financial aid, including monthly allowances.

NSFAS distributes allowances in 10 monthly payments throughout the academic year, typically from February to November. The scheme has confirmed:

Allowance Payments for May 2025

In the latter half of 2024, university students received their allowances via their institutions, while TVET College students were paid directly into their personal bank accounts.

For 2025, NSFAS has confirmed that TVET College students will continue receiving their allowances via direct deposits into their bank accounts. Students are encouraged to update their banking details on the myNSFAS portal.

The allowances payment channel for TVET College students remains their own bank accounts. Colleges should encourage new NSFAS qualifying students to open a bank account at any of the South African banking institutions.

Although NSFAS intended to transition university students to direct payments, this plan is delayed due to an ongoing court case. As a result, universities will continue handling allowance payments in 2025, following their own procedures.

How to Upload Banking Details for TVET Students

Only students with confirmed NSFAS funding and submitted registration data are eligible to add banking details on the myNSFAS portal. Here’s how:

  1. Visit the myNSFAS portal

  2. Log in using your myNSFAS credentials

  3. Select "Bank Account Details" under "Profile Information"

  4. Enter your bank details accurately

  5. Click "Save"

Students are encouraged to keep their details updated and stay informed through official NSFAS communications to avoid any delays in payment.
