The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced the allowance payment structure for December 2024.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. This includes money for tuition and registration fees as well as several allowances for food, accommodation and learning materials.
NSFAS Allowances for TVET College Students For 2024
-
Living Allowance: TVET college students receive an annual living allowance of R10,000, distributed across the academic year.
-
Learning Material Allowance: The amount provided for learning materials depends on the specific courses in which students are enrolled.
-
Special Provisions for Students with Disabilities: Students with disabilities qualify for higher living allowances and receive an additional learning materials allowance.
However, some allowances, such as those during simulated training programs, are only available under specific conditions.
TVET Students Won’t Receive Allowances in December
NSFAS divides allowances into 10 payments per year, corresponding to the academic calendar. Since the academic year typically runs from February to November, NSFAS does not disburse allowances in December. This means that students should not expect any payments in December 2024.
Allowances are issued from February to November, covering only the active months of the academic year.
Addressing Payment Delays
Recently there have been delays in the payment of allowances to TVET college students. This is concerning as many students rely on allowances to purchase food and other essentials while pursuing their studies.
NSFAS is set to finalise the payment of all outstanding allowance payments to TVET college students.
NSFAS is finalizing the processes towards the disbursement of outstanding TVET College students’ allowances and payments to accommodation providers.
The financial aid scheme is also committed to paying accommodation providers their outstanding monies. The non-payment of accommodation allowances has put some students at risk of eviction.
Reminder: TVET Students Must Submit Banking Details
NSFAS has urged TVET College students to upload their banking details on the myNSFAS portal to avoid delays in receiving their allowances.
According to NSFAS, approximately 11,000 students have yet to submit their banking details, which could disrupt their payments. Efforts are underway to verify and process all outstanding banking information.
Only students with confirmed funding and submitted registration data can upload banking details. NSFAS verifies all provided bank account information to ensure payments are secure and accurate.
