The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced that university students will receive their allowances in September 2024. This confirmation comes amidst ongoing discussions about the proposed new allowance payment system.

NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at South African universities and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. The funding covers tuition and registration fees, as well as various allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.

Universities to Continue Disbursing Allowances

While NSFAS had initially planned to transfer allowance payments to universities until the end of July 2024, the scheme has now confirmed that universities will continue to disburse these allowances to students until the end of the year.

Following a meeting between Universities South Africa (USAF) and the NSFAS Administrator, Mr F Nomvalo, NSFAS has decided that university students' allowances will continue to be distributed allowances through universities for the remainder of the 2024 academic year.

In September, NSFAS will allocate funds to universities, which will then be responsible for paying student allowances. It's crucial for universities to provide accurate student registration information to NSFAS to ensure that all eligible students receive their payments.

"This means NSFAS will disburse allowances to institutions, which will then distribute them to students, until the end of the 2024 academic year. The pilot accommodation process remains unchanged," said NSFAS.

Institutions are urged to validate student data before disbursing allowances to ensure accuracy.

Proposed New Allowance Payment System

In May, NSFAS Administrator Freeman Nomvalo announced that a new system for allowance payments is being developed and is expected to be fully operational by September 2024. However, the scheme's decision to continue using universities for allowance disbursement raises questions about the implementation timeline and the future of this new system.
