The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has also provided information about when students can expect their funding decisions.
NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to eligible students enrolled in approved programs at universities and TVET colleges. These bursaries cover tuition and registration fees, as well as allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.
During a recent press briefing, NSFAS spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi announced that funding decisions will be prioritised for SASSA beneficiaries and first-time entering students. NSFAS aims to complete all funding decisions by 31 December 2024.
Following the release of matric results on 16 January 2025, students will start receiving their funding decisions. However, the Minister of Higher Education, Nobuhle Nkabana, noted that the delayed release of matric results may cause some delays in these decisions.
In discussions with stakeholders, it was agreed that NSFAS is a key factor in the stability of higher education institutions. However, delays in matric exam results often lead to delays in funding decisions, impacting students’ ability to plan for the academic year.
Understanding Your NSFAS Status
After NSFAS reviews your application and confirms your eligibility, they will require you to be registered at your institution to finalise your funding. If your status reads “Provisionally Funded – Funded Subject to Registration and Availability of Funds,” this indicates that you have been approved for funding, pending your registration.
NSFAS Application Statuses Explained
- Verification: During this phase, NSFAS reviews the information you submitted to confirm your eligibility. This involves verifying your personal details, household income, academic qualifications, and financial need. There is no set timeframe for the verification process, as it can vary depending on NSFAS's system.
- Provisionally Funded – Funded Subject to Registration and Availability of Funds: This status means you have been approved for funding, but NSFAS is awaiting registration data from your institution. Once you register, your funding will be confirmed.
Applicants are encouraged to check their NSFAS status regularly on the myNSFAS portal for updates. However, patience is key when awaiting NSFAS decisions.
