The Higher Education sector is currently busy with students registering for the qualifications of their choice. It is during this time that most institutions will require students to make initial payments to be able to cover costs such as registration fees, prior to them attending classes for the academic year.
According to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the government bursary scheme is currently in its final stages of finalising its payments for students who will be funded for 2023.
DHET Minister Dr. Blade Nzimande also made an announcement:
National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) will make upfront payments to institutions to cover for costs related to registration, tuition fees and living allowances.
This is an indication that Nsfas-funded students will be registered by all the institutions without paying an upfront registration fee.
Nzimande has also confirmed that these upfront payments will be made to public universities and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges by end of January 2023.
