The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has cautioned beneficiaries against using unauthorised platforms for managing Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants.

Sassa distributes the SRD grant monthly to millions of vulnerable individuals in South Africa, providing crucial financial support to unemployed people in the country.

Grant beneficiaries are advised to provide Sassa with their correct mobile numbers to receive updates on their SRD grant applications, including information on payment dates for approved beneficiaries.

Sassa urges beneficiaries to ensure that they supply a reachable mobile number to receive feedback on their application status.

Recently, Sassa warned beneficiaries about a new scam on WhatsApp that falsely advertises services related to social grant administration, including updating personal details. Beneficiaries are advised not to share personal information on WhatsApp, as these messages are fraudulent and not from Sassa.

To update their SRD grant mobile number, beneficiaries must use the official SRD grant website or other authorised Sassa channels.

How to Change Your Mobile Number for SRD Grants

  1. Visit the official Sassa SRD website.
  2. Navigate to the section for updating contact information.
  3. Enter your 13-digit South African ID number to verify your identity.
  4. Update your mobile number with the new one you wish to use.
  5. If you encounter any issues, contact the Sassa helpline on 0800 601 011.

If the new mobile number differs from the one used in the initial application, beneficiaries should call the Sassa call centre on 0800 601 011 to update their details.
