The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has announced that all Sassa Gold Cards will expire on Friday, 28 February 2025. This development affects millions of social grant beneficiaries across South Africa, as the Gold Cards are currently used to access grant payments.
Sassa oversees the distribution of over 18 million permanent grants, including the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid. The majority of beneficiaries rely on the Gold Cards to access their funds each month.
Postbank confirmed the looming expiration of the Gold Cards, urging beneficiaries to transition to the new Sassa Black Card before the deadline.
All Sassa Gold Cards will stop working on 28 February 2025.
With just over a month remaining until the cards expire, Postbank has encouraged all beneficiaries to upgrade.
Beneficiaries who have not upgraded to the Postbank Black Card are urged to do so.

Documents Needed to Replace Your Sassa Card
To receive a Postbank Black Card, beneficiaries need to bring:
- A valid ID or temporary ID.
- If collecting a grant on behalf of someone, the official Sassa proxy letter.
- Asylum seekers must present their official approval letter from Sassa.
Postbank has emphasised the importance of securing a valid ID, even if it’s a temporary one, as it is required to be issued a new card. Beneficiaries who have lost or misplaced their IDs are encouraged to obtain a temporary ID as soon as possible to avoid delays in receiving their grants.
The clock is ticking for South Africa’s grant beneficiaries to make the switch. For assistance, beneficiaries are encouraged to contact Postbank or visit the nearest designated replacement site.
