The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) pays permanent social grants to over 18 million people each month. A recent update to its payment system requires beneficiaries to take action to ensure continued access to their grants.

Sassa gold cards are set to expire at the end of May 2024. While these cards remain valid for the April and May 2024 payment cycles, beneficiaries will need to update their payment method before the June 2024 grant disbursement.

Postbank Black Card Offers Enhanced Security

Sassa has encouraged recipients to switch to a new Postbank black card, which features several upgrades, including enhanced security.

However, beneficiaries who do not wish to transition to the black card have another payment option available.

Alternative Option to the Postbank Black Card

Sassa confirmed that beneficiaries may have their grants paid directly into their personal bank accounts as an alternative.

Clients can also choose to have their social grant paid directly into their personal bank account.

To make this change, individuals must visit their nearest Sassa office.

Required Documents for Updating Payment Method

To change their grant payment method, beneficiaries must provide the following documents:

  • Proof of bank account issued by the bank

  • Three months’ bank statements showing personal details, including name and account number

  • Proof of identity
