SRD Grant Has Been Extended Until 2026

In a move that brings relief to millions, the South African government has announced the extension of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant for another year.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana confirmed that the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant's implementation will be extended until March 2026. 

The Minister revealed this during the 2025 Budget Speech, allocating R35.2 billion for the continuation of the crucial financial support. 

The COVID19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD), in its current form, will be extended by a year to end March 2026. R35.2 billion is allocated for this purpose

Minister Godongwana echoed President Cyril Ramaphosa's announcement that the grant will be used as basis for the introduction of basic income support. 

As announced by the President in the State of the Nation Address, the SRD will be used as a basis for the introduction of a sustainable form of income support for unemployed people.

The Minister added that the future of the grant will be decided later this year.

The future form and nature of the SRD will be informed by the outcome of the review of active labour market programmes.
