The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) announced that over 229,000 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 admissions were processed on Thursday, 11 July 2024. These applications were submitted within just a few hours of the application period opening.
On Thursday, the GDE opened online applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 admissions in public schools for the 2025 academic year. Parents and guardians can apply through the GDE admissions portal to secure placements for their children.
How To Apply To Gauteng Public Schools
Within the first hour of the application period, the provincial education department recorded more than 79,000 applications. By 4 PM, the total number of applications had surged to 229,885, with 100,291 for Grade 1 and 129,564 for Grade 8.
MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation, Matome Chiloane, launched the online system at the Diepsloot Youth Centre and assisted parents with the application process.
The MEC described the launch as a success, highlighting the number of applications received as a clear indication of the high demand for placements in Gauteng public schools.

Parents in the province have one month left to submit admission applications for their children, with the application period closing on August 12, 2024.
Parents and guardians can apply by visiting www.gdeadmissions.gov.za. Applicants are encouraged to upload certified copies of the required documents onto the system or submit them at the schools they applied to within seven school days.

The placement period will start on 16 September 2024, and will continue until all learners are placed. Placement offers will be sent to parents' cell phone numbers and must be accepted within seven days.
