The University of South Africa (Unisa) has confirmed its NSFAS allowance payment plan for the first half of 2025. Following the announcement, many students are eager to know how much they will receive in NSFAS allowances for the academic year.
NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to eligible students enrolled in approved programmes at universities and TVET colleges. This funding covers tuition and registration fees, along with allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.
How Much Are the NSFAS Allowances for 2025?
Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane has confirmed that NSFAS allowances will increase by 4% in 2025.
Unisa students funded by NSFAS receive allowances based on their course load. These include a once-off learning materials allowance and a monthly personal care allowance.
Learning Materials Allowance
This is a once-off payment at the beginning of the academic year.

In 2025, students will receive R5 678.

Students with disabilities will receive R6 240.

This allowance is only paid once per year.
Personal Care Allowance
This allowance is paid monthly for 10 months of the academic year.

Students will receive approximately R316 per month.

Payments are made from February to November.
NSFAS allowances are disbursed in 10 instalments throughout the year.
How Will Unisa Pay NSFAS Allowances in 2025?
Unisa has confirmed that NSFAS allowances will be paid via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) directly into students’ bank accounts.
NSFAS allowances are paid by the institution via EFT into the student’s bank account.
This method applies to all university students receiving NSFAS funding.
