The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has released the Eligibility Criteria and Conditions for the NSFAS Student Loan Scheme, including details on allowances, particularly the transport allowance.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving students enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. NSFAS funding covers tuition and registration fees, as well as several allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials
These allowances ensure that students do not have to bear the full burden of additional expenses associated with obtaining a degree.
However, not all allowances available to NSFAS bursary recipients will be extended to students receiving an NSFAS loan.
Will the NSFAS Loan Cover Transport?
The NSFAS loan is intended for students who do not meet the financial criteria for the NSFAS bursary. However, it provides similar support to that offered to bursary recipients.
NSFAS loans assist eligible students with essential study-related costs, including tuition fees, learning materials, and accommodation.
It is important to note that transportation costs are not covered by the NSFAS loan.
The loan only provides funding for tuition, books, and accommodation. Students will therefore be responsible for covering their own transport expenses, including travel to and from their institution and any travel required for academic purposes.
