At the midpoint of March 2022, there were more than 1.5 million backlogs related to driver's license cards in South Africa. A large contributor to these backlogs was due to the country’s single machine being away for repairs.
Ministry of Transport spokesperson, Collen Msibi, says the backlogs related to the issues of the machine will be completed by the end of April 2022. He adds that they are on track with completing the production of these cards.
Motorists who apply to renew their license before the 31 March 2022 deadline will have the validity of their cards extended for a further three months. This however will only be applicable if they have their old cards. These motorists can expect to get their license cards by the end of September.
Msibi added that these motorists will however need to be able to produce proof of fees paid for the application to renew their license.
Once these three months lapse, proof of the payment of the application in the form of a receipt will be accepted
He said, “the receipt is good enough to last you until the end of September. If you applied before the end of March, your current license [card] which has expired will still be valid for another three months after the end of March, when that three month runs out then your receipt kicks in”.
Msibi added, “This is a call to action from us to say to those who have not applied for their licenses by the end of 31 March, they must go and do so”.
