In a country with extreme levels of poverty and unemployment, an SMS from a governmental organisation known for providing grants to citizens may seem reputable, but this may not be the case.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has warned its clients and South Africans in general about an SMS being sent under the guise of the agency.

The SMS is being sent to members of the public informing unsuspecting individuals that they have been rewarded R85 000 from Sassa. The SMS also contains a reference number along with a phone number you will be able to call to collect your money.

Sassa warned that this message is not from them.

They said, “SASSA warns the public against the below fake information. The agency is not running any grant promotion and the SMS does NOT come from SASSA. Please stay vigilant”.
