The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) pays out a number of different grants on different days of the month. However, some grant receipts have questioned why grants are not paid as the new month begins.
Many questions have been raised around the staggered distributions of grants. Sassa distributes the Older Persons grant, disability grant, child support grant and the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant.
These grants are paid to clients on designated days of the month. Sassa explained that social distancing and ensuring the safety of grant beneficiaries informed their decision to distribute grants this way.
Sassa said, "This is our contribution to maintaining social distance and protecting the vulnerable from congestion at payment facilities. We humbly request beneficiaries to make adjustments with their creditors and budgets generally".
They added that it was a hard decision to make, but the circumstances faced forced the agency to take the decision.
Sassa also said the decision has to be made by a broader government to change the payment date allocations.
