Social grants ensure that the most variable members of our society receive some sort of financial relief. It is estimated that just under half of South Africa’s population are beneficiaries of the social relief grants that are distributed by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

SASSA distributes the following grants
- Disability grant
- War Veterans grant
- Child Support grant
- Grant-in-aid
- Older Persons grant
- Foster care grant
- Care Dependency grant
SASSA also distributes the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. This grant was introduced to support unemployed South Africans between the ages of 18 and 59 during the Covid-19 pandemic. The SRD grant benefits more than nine million South Africans, however, it is expected to end in March 2022.
