SASSA has officially started paying successful beneficiaries who applied for the new R350 grant. Applications for the grant opened on 6 August and millions have applied since then.
In a statement released on Wednesday afternoon, SASSA said it has received over 8 million applications since opening applications for the new cycle.
"By 18 August SASSA had received 8 931 375 applications from all nine provinces, 41% of whom were from males and 59% being female applicants."
While payments start on 25 August, not all beneficiaries will receive their payments today. SASSA has explained that the R350 grant is temporary and does not have a set payment date.
Beneficiaries will be reviewed monthly to ensure that they still meet the requirements to receive payments.
In preparation for grant payouts, SASSA will be working with the South African Post Office to ensure that all approved beneficiaries receive payments.
"Payments of this grant are channeled through direct deposits into approved beneficiaries' bank accounts, mobile money transfers through cell phones and through the South African Post Office.
"The last three digits of approved beneficiaries' identity numbers will be used for payment collection on a specific day of the week. This will help minimize the spread of Covid-19 infections and allow for social distancing on pay days." SASSA said in a statement.
SASSA will be using SMSes to inform beneficiaries about payment collections. This means only approved beneficiaries, who have received an SMS from SASSA, will be allowed to collect grant payments from the Post Office.
If you have not received an SMS from SASSA, that means your grant is not yet available for collection.
