The Amended Senior Certificate commonly referred to as an Adult Matric, is an important qualification for South Africans who did not complete their Grade 12. 

The Senior Certificate is equivalent to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or matric certificate. After obtaining a SC, individuals can choose to pursue further education at universities or TVET colleges

Additionally, many job opportunities in South Africa require a matric certificate as a basic qualification.

If you're an adult looking to further your education and obtain a Senior Certificate, you may be wondering about the eligibility criteria. 

To be eligible for the Senior Certificate exam for adults, you must be 21 years or older and possess one of the following:

You must have a report which shows you passed Grade 9.General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) for Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) are also qualifications that allow you to pursue a Senior Certificate. 

You may also qualify if you hold a recognized equivalent qualification obtained at NQF Level 1. This qualification must include proficiency in two official languages.

If you've already started working toward a Senior Certificate or National Senior Certificate but haven't completed it, you may still be eligible to apply to write the Senior Certificate exams.

One way to qualify is if you have an incomplete Senior Certificate. In this case, you need to complete the remaining subjects to obtain your full Senior Certificate. You may also apply if your School-Based Assessment (SBA) for a National Senior Certificate has expired.

Finally, NSC candidates wrote the NSC exams between 2008-2011 may still register to take the Senior Certificate exams.

In rare cases, youth aged 18 to 20 who are not currently enrolled in school may also be eligible to write the Senior Certificate exam. However, they must meet specific criteria, apply through a different process, and hold a qualifying certificate, such as a GETC, a Grade 9 pass, or an NQF Level 1 equivalent.

Online registration is not available for these learners; they must apply through the provincial Head of Education.
